Elbow Pain in Weightlifting

What helps with elbow pain from lifting weights?

If the pain is only bought on from weight lifting and is on one arm and not the other you’re likely to have an issue with grip strength, shoulder stability, or proprioception (body awareness) when lifting resulting in loading tissue differently from one side to the other. Alternatively, if you’re experiencing elbow pain on both sides when lifting this is likely an issue of core stability or spinal mechanics.

To establish what rehab strategy will work best for you, you need to know your body’s capabilities and what joints and movement patterns are coordinated well and which are not. The sports injury fix video series takes you through closed chain wrist and forearm assessments which are highly applicable to bench press, shoulder press, and any other resistance exercise where force is placed through the wrist joint.

Should you workout if your elbow hurts?

Yes, however, avoid any exercises that hurt the elbow. If it is persistent pain in the elbow when doing any push exercises (bench press, shoulder press, etc) then still workout but concentrate on pull and leg work until you have resolved the issue.

If you’re beginning to notice that ANY workout that involves grip strength is causing a problem (having to hold dumbbells for leg work for example) then the sports injury fix has you covered with strategic exercises to target the three major nerves involved in grip strength issues (ulnar, median and radial).

Never use paint as an excuse to not workout but equally don’t persevere in hope it’ll just sort itself out, this is the number one reason slight niggles turn into chronic long term issues.

What is a weightlifters elbow?

The ugly cousin of both golf and tennis elbow, weightlifters elbow is inflammation of the triceps tendons caused by repetitive motions. The triceps are the group of muscles that sit just above the elbow itself (towards the shoulder). If this area is becoming inflamed when working out it is recommended you start by working through ‘The Shoulder Pain Fix’ video series as often instability of the shoulder joint can result in an overburdened group of triceps.

Don’t waste hours spent searching for ‘the best’ elbow rehab routine online, trolling through thousands of exercises. From the comfort of your own home use our step by step, easy to follow process to guide you to a specific routine relative to you and take back control of your pain and continue to do the things you love.
